Frequently asked questions
How does this cryptogram generator work?
It builds a random substitution alphabet - every letter is assigned a different letter, and no letter can map to itself, since a letter standing for itself would give the solver a free clue. Your spacing, punctuation and capitals are preserved.
Can I print the cryptogram?
Yes. Press Print and the puzzle prints on a clean sheet. Reveal the answer key first if you want it included, or leave it hidden to print the puzzle alone.
How do I make a cryptogram harder?
Use a shorter phrase - frequency analysis needs volume to work, so brief puzzles are tougher. Avoiding one-letter words (A, I) and very common words like THE also removes the usual footholds.
Where can I get ready-made puzzles?
Our printable cryptogram sheet has a dozen famous quotations with answers, ready to print. Or play a fresh one daily in Decode.
