Frequently asked questions
What is a 9 letter word puzzle?
Nine letters are arranged in a three-by-three grid with one letter in the centre. You make as many words of four or more letters as you can, every word must contain the centre letter, and exactly one word uses all nine letters. In Australian newspapers it is called the Target; elsewhere it appears as a word wheel or nine-letter word game.
Is the 9 letter word puzzle free?
Yes. A new puzzle appears every day, there is no sign-up, no app to install and no limit - just open the page and play. Your progress for the day is kept in your own browser.
How do you solve a nine letter word puzzle?
Start with the centre letter and try common four-letter endings around it, then look for a vowel-consonant pattern that could stretch to seven or eight letters. Prefixes and suffixes (re-, un-, -ing, -ers, -ion) usually reveal the nine-letter answer. If you are stuck, the 9 letter word solver lists every valid word for your grid.
What is a good score on a nine letter word puzzle?
Finding a quarter of the available words is Good, half is Very Good, and about three quarters is Excellent. Finding the nine-letter word itself beats the puzzle outright, regardless of how many shorter words you found.
Where does the puzzle come from?
Grids are generated from the public-domain ENABLE tournament word list - the same dictionary the rest of this site uses - so every answer is a real, checkable word. A new grid unlocks each day at midnight, your local time.
